Cisco spezialisiert sich auf Netzwerkhardware, ‑software und Dienste in Bereichen wie Internet of Things (IoT), Cybersicherheit, Videokonferenz und Energiemanagement; bekannte Produkte sind Webex, OpenDNS, Jabber, Duo Security, Silicon One und Jasper.
Das Unternehmen wurde im Dezember 1984 von Leonard Bosack und Sandy Lerner, zwei Informatikern der Stanford University, gegründet und verband zunächst Campus‑Netze per Multi‑Protokoll‑Router. Cisco ging 1990 an die Nasdaq (Ticker: CSCO) und wurde am 8. Juni 2009 in den Dow Jones Industrial Average aufgenommen.
Auf dem Höhepunkt der Dot‑com‑Blase im März 2000 erreichte Cisco eine Marktkapitalisierung von über 500 Mrd. US‑Dollar und war kurzzeitig das wertvollste Unternehmen der Welt – noch vor Microsoft. Die Aktie ist zudem Bestandteil des S&P 500, Nasdaq‑100, Russell 1000 sowie des Russell 1000 Growth Index.
