March 31 - (The Insurer) - Several communities in California's Eastern Sierra region were evacuated on Sunday after the Silver Fire ignited and burned through 1,000 acres.
The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) said the blaze ignited at around 2:11 p.m. PT on Sunday in Inyo County.
More than 200 firefighters were battling the blaze, but gusts reaching 35 miles per hour at Bishop Airport grounded some firefighting aircraft and complicated containment efforts, Cal Fire said in a Facebook update late on Sunday.
To date, Cal Fire data shows wildfires have burned 58,108 acres in California so far in 2025, with 16,251 structures destroyed.
The bulk of this damage was from the Palisades and Eaton fires in January, which are expected to become the costliest insured losses on record for the peril.
