Euro slips to 7-week low after Trump threatens tariffs over Greenland

ReutersJan 18, 2026 6:29 PM

- The euro fell slightly in early Asian trade, hitting its lowest in seven weeks, after U.S. President Donald Trump vowed to impose tariffs on imports from some European countries until the U.S. is allowed to buy Greenland.

Trump said additional 10% import tariffs would take effect on February 1 on goods from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Finland and Great Britain — all already subject to tariffs imposed by Trump.

Trump's promise sparked a backlash from European nations, who decried the threat as blackmail, with France proposing to respond with a range of previously untested economic countermeasures.

The euro EUR= fell 0.1% against the dollar to $1.1582 in early trade on Sunday, its lowest level since November 28.
