Filecoinã«ã€ããŠ
Filecoin is a decentralized storage network that aims to provide a more efficient and secure alternative to traditional cloud storage solutions. The platform was launched in 2017 after raising $205 million through an initial coin offering (ICO).
The core idea behind Filecoin is to create an incentivized, peer-to-peer network where users can store and retrieve data. Unlike centralized cloud storage providers, Filecoin is open-source and decentralized, allowing the community to govern the network. This decentralized approach is intended to improve the integrity and accessibility of stored data.
On the Filecoin network, there are three key participant groups: clients, storage miners, and retrieval miners. Clients pay storage miners to securely store their data, with transactions denominated in the native FIL token. Storage miners earn rewards by allocating unused hard drive space and verifying the integrity of stored data. Retrieval miners, on the other hand, facilitate the retrieval of stored data for clients.
Filecoin utilizes two novel consensus mechanisms - Proof-of-Replication (PoRep) and Proof-of-Spacetime (PoSt) - to ensure the reliability and verifiability of stored data. These mechanisms aim to address the limitations of traditional cloud storage, where centralized providers may be prone to censorship or data loss.
The FIL token powers the Filecoin ecosystem, serving as the medium of exchange for storage and retrieval services. Clients pay storage miners in FIL, while miners earn FIL rewards for their participation. The open and competitive nature of the Filecoin market allows for dynamic pricing of storage and retrieval services.
