The USD/JPY pair stages a modest recovery from the 157.25 area, or fresh weekly touched during the Asian session on Friday, and climbs to the 158.00 neighborhood in the last hour.

The Japanese Yen (JPY) outperforms all its major peers on Thursday as traders seek safety in the currency amid a sharp sell-off in US equities led by technology and chip shares. The US Dollar (USD) also gives up earlier gains and slips back into negative territory, adding pressure on USD/JPY.

United Overseas Bank’s (UOB) Quek Ser Leang and Lee Sue Ann describe highly volatile USD/JPY trading, with swings between 157.39 and 158.74 before a close at 158.42 as lower US yields supported the Japanese Yen. They see limited directional edge intraday, expecting a 157.70–158.70 range, and maintain a one-to-three-week range-trading view between 157.00 and 159.00.
