MEXICO CITY, April 8 - Chinese carmaker Guangzhou Automobile Group (GAC) 601238.SS will begin operations at its first assembly plant in Mexico during the second half of 2026, the company said on Wednesday, becoming the second Chinese automaker to establish an assembly line in Mexico.
The plant will use a flexible assembly model capable of handling internal combustion, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric vehicle technologies, the company said.
The company did not say where in the country the assembly plant would be developed, nor the planned investment.
Vehicles to be assembled include sedans, SUVs, pickups and crossovers.
Models earmarked for local assembly in Mexico include the EMZOOM, AION UT and the upcoming GS7.
GAC said the Mexico plans lay the groundwork for future production, research and business expansion across Latin America.
Last month GAC also announced plans to start production in Brazil in 2027.
Fellow Chinese automaker JAC also operates a Mexico assembly plant.
