USTR Greer says economic relationship with China is stable

ReutersApr 7, 2026 3:11 PM

- U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said on Tuesday the U.S. economic relationship with China is stable and President Donald Trump will aim to keep it that way in a meeting next month with his Chinese counterpart.

The United States is not looking for a massive confrontation with China and wants to maintain stable relations, Greer said in an appearance at the Hudson Institute think tank.

U.S. negotiators discuss rare earths and critical minerals whenever they meet with their Chinese counterparts, Greer said, but the United States is talking with other countries about supplies of critical minerals and also there needs to be some kind of price mechanism for them.

China and the United States are not yet at the point where they can talk about investment programs, Greer said.
