Aug 13 - (The Insurer) – Specialty insurer Atrium has appointed Rob James as an underwriter on its aviation team, the company said on Tuesday.
James, who will join in the first quarter of 2026, will work with Bassel Matta, head of aviation.
He has over 17 years of experience in aviation underwriting and joins from Liberty Specialty Markets (LSM), where has he built the insurer’s all-risk and war aviation account. James previously spent 12 years in the aviation team at Tokio Marine Kiln (TMK).
“His robust skillset and experience would be an outstanding addition to the service we deliver to our brokers and clients,” said Peter Laidlaw, active underwriter at Syndicate 609.
Matta, who succeeded Alex Cullen as head of aviation earlier this year, said James’ appointment highlights Atrium’s “unwavering support for aviation as a core class.”
In August, Atrium Syndicate 609 reported a 5 percentage point deterioration in the midpoint of its outlook range estimate for the 2021 year of account after recent settlements and a London High Court judgment related to Russia-Ukraine lessor claims.
In March, the syndicate reported a 2024 full-year combined ratio of 99.5% and increased its ultimate gross reserves for Russia-Ukraine lessor claims to 393.4 million pounds ($508 million) from 264.5 million pounds a year earlier.
