Aspen appoints Welch to newly created group CUO role

- (The Insurer) - Aspen Insurance Holdings has appointed John Welch, who joined the (re)insurer from Axa XL in 2023, as group chief underwriting officer, effective August 1.

In the newly created role, Welch will lead the oversight, development and execution of Aspen’s underwriting strategy across insurance and reinsurance and all its operating entities.

He joined Aspen in June 2023 as reinsurance CUO, having previously served as chief executive of domestic markets at Axa XL Re.

Welch has over 30 years of experience in the industry. Before Axa XL, he held roles at XL and Travelers.

In his new role, Welch will report to Aspen Bermuda Limited group president and CEO Christian Dunleavy.

“John’s promotion reflects his broad and deep expertise and experience and further strengthens the underwriting and leadership capabilities that underpin Aspen’s continued success and our ability to serve our customers, trading partners and investors alike," Dunleavy said.
