- (The Insurer) - Africa Specialty Risks (ASR) has appointed Eric Malterre to the newly created role of chief underwriting officer, the company announced on Wednesday.

London-based Malterre will be responsible for developing underwriting strategies, driving profitability and ensuring underwriting standards are aligned with the company’s risk appetite and objectives.

Reporting to CEO Mikir Shah, he will work closely with Martin Boreham, director of underwriting, head of liability and active underwriter, and Brian McGregor, director of underwriting and head of property.

Malterre has 25 years of industry experience across Europe, Asia Pacific and Africa, including senior leadership roles at Marsh, Coface, Axa and Sedgwick, where he was most recently chief client officer for its international division.

From 2016 to 2019, he served as CUO at Axa Africa Specialty Risks, which was founded by current ASR CEO Shah.

Shah said: “Since our launch in 2020, we’ve doubled our GWP each year. Having worked with Eric previously, I know he has excellent underwriting expertise and will provide the necessary guidance as we continue on our growth trajectory while retaining our strong underwriting discipline.”
