WASHINGTON, June 23 (Reuters) - The United States helped around 250 U.S. citizens, permanent residents and their immediate family members leave Israel since Saturday, a U.S. State Department official said on Monday.
The assisted departures from Israel come as tensions rose in the Middle East, after Washington struck Iran's nuclear sites over the weekend. Iran targeted a U.S. base in Qatar on Monday in retaliation.
U.S. ally Israel's war with Iran began on June 13 when Israel struck Iran. The air war raised alarms in a region that was already on edge since the start of Israel's war in Gaza in late 2023. President Donald Trump said on Monday that Iran and Israel had agreed to a ceasefire.
The State Department official said that the department began assisted departure flights from Israel on Saturday.
Since then, a total of seven flights have departed Israel with about 250 U.S. citizens, permanent residents and their accompanying immediate family members, the official said, adding flights have arrived in Athens, Rome and Larnaca in Cyprus.
