June 12 - (The Insurer) - Markel’s executive underwriting officer for casualty Jennifer Devereaux and senior managing director for casualty product lines Matt Anderson are both leaving the company, broking and underwriting sources told The Insurer, marking the latest senior underwriting departures from the firm.
A spokesperson for Markel confirmed that Devereaux has resigned from her position, effective July 1.
"We thank her for her contributions and are grateful for the leadership and insights she brought to the role. Jenn has been pivotal in positioning our casualty portfolio within US Wholesale and Specialty for long-term success," the company said in a statement.
A Markel spokesperson also confirmed that Anderson had resigned from post, effective immediately.
"We thank him for his many contributions to Markel and the wholesale excess casualty product line team," a spokesperson said in a statement.
"We are committed to a smooth and thoughtful transition for both of these roles," they added.
Devereaux and Anderson did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The Insurer was not immediately able to ascertain what Devereaux and Anderson planned to do next.
Devereaux had been with Markel since the beginning of 2019 and was promoted to her role in September 2024. She had previously worked at Chubb, Arch, AIG, Marsh and Aon, as well as Temple Insurance Company in Toronto.
Glen Allen, Virginia-based Anderson has spent more than 23 years with Markel and was promoted to his latest role in February.
In April, Markel eliminated its global executive underwriting officer posts following the departure of longtime executive Robin Russo, which resulted in the exits of professional liability executive Jim Proferes, cyber executive Kelly Castriotta, and casualty executive Mia Finsness.
Devereaux said in an interview with The Insurer TV in April that underwriters must get comfortable with ambiguity as casualty faced a complex road ahead.
