WASHINGTON, May 20 (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Tuesday that the Millennium Challenge Corporation, an aid agency launched by Republican former President George W. Bush to reduce poverty and promote economic growth around the world, was undergoing a review to improve it, not eliminate it.
The comments to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee came after staff at the agency were told last month that its work would wind down amid the Trump administration's drastic cuts to U.S. foreign assistance.
Another agency, the U.S. Development Finance Corporation, had the opportunity to expand in the administration's overhaul of foreign assistance, Rubio added.
