Germany's AfD backs new vote for chancellor on Wednesday

ReutersMay 6, 2025 9:26 AM

- The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) supports a second vote in parliament for chancellor taking place on Wednesday, the party co-leader said after conservative leader Friedrich Merz failed to win the majority needed.

"We will not stand in the way of a second round of voting tomorrow," Tino Chrupalla told n-tv television, adding Bundestag President Julia Kloeckner had made this request of the AfD.

The AfD is the second biggest party in the Bundestag lower house and was officially designated as extremist last week by the domestic spy agency.
