Adds information on tariffs
MEXICO CITY, Feb 20 (Reuters) - Mexican Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard said on Thursday he had a "constructive dialogue" with top trade officials from the United States, including commerce secretary Howard Lutnick, amid tensions over possible tariffs between the major trade partners.
Ebrard, who has traveled to Washington to meet with U.S. officials, also said on X that the joint work on trade will start on Monday, without giving further details.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced earlier this month 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, which are set to take effect on March 12. He has also put on pause a threat of imposing a blanket 25% tariff on both Mexico and Canada.
Mexico and the United States are each others top trade partners and their economies have become tightly interconnected over decades of North American free trade policies. Mexico's government has called the tariffs unfair and urged dialogue.
