German opposition leader Merz: Democracy in danger but action needed

- Germany's democracy is in danger as a result of the impasse over migration and security policy, German opposition leader Friedrich Merz said on Wednesday, accepting the possibility that the far-right AfD may help to pass a law for the first time.

"No doubt about it: democracy is in danger if radicals come to power, so we ... will do everything we can to prevent this from happening," Merz told the Bundestag lower house.

"I will add that democracy is also under threat when a social and political minority ... uses radicals as a tool to permanently ignore the will of the majority of the population," Merz said, as his CDU/CSU bloc prepares to put forward a law cracking down on migration on Friday.
