WASHINGTON, Jan 22 (Reuters) - The additional 1,500 active-duty U.S. troops heading to the border with Mexico after President Donald Trump's executive order are not expected to have law enforcement roles, a U.S. official told reporters on Wednesday.
The official said the U.S. troops started deploying earlier on Wednesday and will include 500 Marines.
Trump in his first day in office on Monday declared illegal immigration a national emergency and tasked the U.S. military with aiding border security. He also issued a broad ban on asylum and took steps to restrict citizenship for children born on American soil.
