Adds detail on disputed territory in paragraph 3
Dec 27 (Reuters) - An earthquake of magnitude 6.6 struck the Kuril Islands on Friday, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) said.
The quake was at a depth of 145 km (90.1 miles), GFZ said.
The islands have been characterised by a territorial dispute between Russia and Japan, which dates back to the end of World War Two when Soviet troops seized them from the Japanese. The row has prevented the two countries from signing a formal peace treaty.
