Jan 19 (Reuters) - When confronted with unreasonable U.S. tariffs, the European Union is in a position to react, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said at a press conference on Monday.
"We do not want this escalation. We do not want a trade dispute with the United States," Merz said. "But if we are confronted with tariffs that we consider unreasonable, then we are capable of responding," he added.
This will be discussed at the EU summit in Brussels on Thursday, Merz said, adding that he will try to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday.
