Barkin: Layoffs, consumer sentiment need close study for evidence of economy's direction

ReutersJan 6, 2026 2:59 PM

- Richmond Federal Reserve president Tom Barkin said he would be watching changes in layoffs and consumer sentiment in coming months for signs of whether the economy is beginning to slip or strengthen.

"We're in a low-hiring, low-firing world. That could change. It could change either way," Barkin said at a local Chamber of Commerce event in North Carolina.

For consumers, "should the environment get to be one that people say I've got to save for tomorrow, that would be a significant pullback in the economy. It's something to watch for."
