English actor Joe Alwyn has stirred speculation about stepping into the role of the iconic British spy, James Bond.
The 34-year-old, best known for his six-year relationship with Grammy-winning artist Taylor Swift, addressed the possibility on the red carpet at the 97th Academy Awards.
When asked by Variety if he would consider portraying 007, Alwyn responded with enthusiasm. 'Oh, wow – who wouldn’t throw their hat in the ring? You know?' he said, before jokingly adding, 'If you’re offering!" As for Bond’s signature martini preference, Alwyn remained diplomatic, saying, 'I like both – I do, I do.'

The role of Bond has been vacant since Daniel Craig’s departure following No Time to Die in 2021. With creative control now in the hands of Amazon MGM Studios, producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson have hinted at a fresh direction for the franchise. 'Every time we cast a new actor, the films change... it's the excitement of a new Bond, a new direction,' Wilson told People.

Alwyn, who recently starred in The Brutalist as Harry Lee Van Buren, also shared his admiration for his co-star Adrien Brody, who secured his second Best Actor award at Sunday’s ceremony but disgusted fans by throwing his gum at his girlfriend from the stage. 'I've been – obviously, like so many people – a fan of his for so long,' Alwyn said. 'To share a scene with him and work with him for that month was really special. And I think he's just unbelievable in the film.'

Alwyn’s personal life continues to attract attention. He and Swift ended their long-term relationship in June 2023, a split he described as challenging. 'I would hope that anyone and everyone can empathise and understand the difficulties that come with the end of a long, loving, fully committed relationship of over six-and-a-half years,' he previously told The Sunday Times.

Elsewhere at the 97th Academy Awards, Anora dominated with five wins, including Best Picture. Rising star Mikey Madison delivered a shocking upset in the Best Actress category, beating veteran nominee Demi Moore. The 62-year-old Moore, who had been considered a frontrunner for The Substance, appeared visibly disappointed when Madison’s name was announced.

Adrien Brody triumphed over Timothée Chalamet for Best Actor with his performance in The Brutalist, while Kieran Culkin kicked off the evening with a Best Supporting Actor win for A Real Pain. Zoe Saldana also took home Best Supporting Actress for her role in the controversial Emilia Pérez.
Madison, 25, used her acceptance speech to acknowledge the sex worker community, reflecting on her experience portraying an escort in Anora. 'I also just want to, again, recognise and honor the sex worker community. I will continue to support and be an ally,' she said.

The night concluded with Anora securing the coveted Best Picture award, triumphing over The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown, Conclave, Dune: Part Two, Emilia Pérez, I’m Still Here, Nickel Boys, The Substance, and Wicked.
