GRAINS-Chicago grains slip as Trump's war comments cool oil prices

ReutersMar 10, 2026 10:38 AM

- Chicago soybean, corn and wheat futures eased further from multi-year and multi-month highs on Tuesday, as U.S. President Donald Trump's prediction that the war with Iran could end soon sent crude oil tumbling.

The most-active soybean contract on the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) Sv1 was down 0.3% at $11.92-1/4 a bushel as of 1028 GMT.

CBOT wheat Wv1 dropped 1.1% to $5.96-3/4 a bushel, while corn Cv1 fell 0.8% to $4.50 a bushel.

On Monday, soybeans and wheat had touched their highest in 21 months and corn a 10-month peak, before ending lower.

Grain markets have been buffeted by wild fluctuations in crude oil, which surged to its highest since mid-2022 on Monday before plummeting as investors wrestled with the possible impact of the week-old U.S.-Israeli war against Iran. O/R

Grain are influenced by oil fluctuations both because they are tied to commodity investment flows and since crops like soybeans and corn are widely used to produce biofuel.

Trump's comment about the conflict ending soon, as well as his allusion to waivers on some oil-related sanctions, tempered market jitters about prolonged disruptions to global oil supplies.

"Without the move in oil, grains would not be where there are today," CM Navigator analyst Donatas Jankauskas said in a note.

"What is clear is that markets are extremely sensitive to headlines and can post unprecedented moves almost immediately."

Global supply remained ample for grains and oilseeds, with an expected record Brazilian soybean crop set to swell availability.

However, rising shipping costs in the light of higher fuel prices could affect grain trade.

Traders also awaited the U.S. Department of Agriculture's monthly world crop report due later in the day, which is expected to make only minor adjustments to its U.S. and global supply forecasts.
