US Cash Grains-Corn basis eases as futures climb; soy basis mixed

ReutersJan 28, 2026 6:44 PM

- Spot basis bids for corn were steady to weaker in the U.S. Midwest on Wednesday, spot checks showed, as rising Chicago Board of Trade futures appeared to spur farmer grain sales in a few areas.

  • The basis had firmed in recent days as frigid temperatures and a massive weekend storm slowed the movement of grain into elevators and processing sites.

  • But corn bids ticked lower in a few locations by Wednesday as CBOT March corn futures CH26 climbed back to $4.30 a bushel for the first time since January 12, when bearish crop reports from the U.S. Department of Agriculture had sent prices tumbling.

  • The corn basis weakened by 8 cents a bushel at a Cincinnati, Ohio, elevator and by 3 cents at a Linden, Indiana, ethanol plant.

  • The U.S. Energy Information Administration said weekly production of corn-based ethanol decreased in the week ended January 23, ahead of the winter storm, to 1.114 million barrels per day, retreating from an all-time high of 1.196 million bpd two weeks ago. EIA/S

  • Ethanol stockpiles fell to 25.4 million barrels, down from a nine-month high of 25.739 million a week earlier.

  • Soybean basis bids were mixed. The basis improved by 5 cents a bushel at a crushing plant in Morristown, Indiana, but fell by 2 cents at Cincinnati.

  • Late in Wednesday's trading session, CBOT March corn CH26 was up 3-1/4 cents at $4.29-3/4 a bushel, paring gains after reaching $4.33-1/4. CBOT March soybeans SH26 were up 7 cents at $10.74-1/4 a bushel. GRA/
