US Cash Grains-Corn, soy basis mixed as weather slows transportation

CHICAGO, Jan 26 (Reuters) - Spot basis bids for corn and soybeans were steady to mixed in the U.S. Midwest on Monday as frigid temperature descended across the Farm Belt following a weekend storm, slowing the movement of grain, especially by rail and barge, merchandisers said.

Minimum temperatures fell below zero degrees Fahrenheit (minus 18 degrees Celsius) on Monday as far south as southern Missouri, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in a daily weather note.
Wintry weather and ice stalled barge movement on Midwest rivers, grain brokers said, slowing shipments headed toward exporters at the Gulf Coast.
BNSF Railway said last week that heavy snow, high winds and extreme cold would threaten train movement.
Chicago Board of Trade corn, soybean and wheat futures turned lower by mid-session, discouraging fresh farmer sales. Ample global grain supplies have capped rallies. GRA/
The spot soybean basis improved by a nickel per bushel at a Morristown, Indiana, crushing plant, but fell by 1 cent at a terminal elevator in Cincinnati, Ohio.
For corn, the basis strengthened by 4 cents at Cincinnati but fell by 5 cents at a Cedar Rapids, Iowa, processing site.
Corn bids were mixed at ethanol plants as well, with the basis firming by 2 cents at a Union City, Indiana, site and falling by 2 cents at Council Bluffs, Iowa.
