- Britain on Friday announced new emergency energy support of 20 million pounds ($26.77 million) for Ukraine after President Volodymyr  Zelenskiy declared a state of emergency following sustained attacks on the country's power infrastructure.

Zelenskiy acted as emergency crews worked to restore heating and electricity in Kyiv and other cities after last week's attacks by Russia knocked out supplies during sub-zero temperatures.

Here are the key announcements alongside the extra funding:

  • Britain announces additional emergency funding to repair, restore and protect Ukraine's power grid this winter

  • Funding aims to keep electricity and heating on in homes, hospitals and schools during harsh winter conditions

  • UK also expands its school-twinning scheme under the 100 Year Partnership, adding 300 more schools over the next three years

  • Programme will benefit 54,000 pupils across Britain and Ukraine

  • British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the 100-year partnership reflects values Russia is trying to destroy

  • Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper said school links will build skills for young people and reaffirmed UK support for Ukraine's energy resilience

  • New package brings total UK support for Ukraine's energy sector to over 470 million pounds since Russia's invasion

  • Defence ties include a 1.6-billion-pound UK deal to supply advanced air-defence missiles to Ukraine
