RIO DE JANEIRO, Jan 7 (Reuters) - Brazil imported a record 17.3 billion liters of diesel in 2025, with Russia holding its spot as the South American nation's top supplier despite ceding some share to the United States, a report from consultancy StoneX showed on Wednesday.
The volume imported by Brazil represents a 20% climb from 2024.
Increased domestic demand and a decline in local production drove the growth, StoneX said.
The climb in imports also occured despite an increase in the mandatory percentage of biofuels required in diesel sold by distributors in Brazil.
Imports account for about 20% of the country's diesel consumption.
SUPPLIES FROM RUSSIA, THE U.S.
Brazil imported 8.1 billion liters (2.14 billion gallons) of diesel from Russia last year, down 14% year-on-year.
The decline was driven between August and November, when Russia's oil refining capacity fell amid Ukrainian attacks against its processing units, according to StoneX.
Meanwhile, Brazil's diesel imports from the U.S. rose to 5.7 billion liters in 2025 from 2.4 billion liters the year before.
For 2026, StoneX said it expects higher Brazilian imports from the U.S., while "Russian volume will depend, in part, on the conflict with Ukraine."
