CHICAGO, Dec 29 (Reuters) - Basis bids for corn were mostly steady to firmer in the U.S. Midwest on Monday while basis bids for soybeans were mostly unchanged, spot checks showed, as Chicago Board of Trade grain futures declined, discouraging farmer sales.
The corn basis improved by a nickel a bushel at a corn processing plant in Blair, Nebraska.
Bids were narrowly mixed at ethanol facilities, with the basis strengthening by 1 cent at Annawan, Illinois, and falling by 2 cents at a Union City, Indiana, site.
Cash bids for soybeans were mostly unchanged but the basis firmed by 15 cents a bushel at Savanna, Illinois, where grain is loaded onto barges for shipment on the Mississippi River toward exporters at the Gulf Coast.
CBOT March corn futures CH26 fell in a retreat from Friday's six-week high above $4.50 a bushel. GRA/
As of 12:22 p.m. CST (1822 GMT), CBOT March corn CH26 was down 7-1/2 cents at $4.42-1/2 per bushel and March soybeans SH26 were down 9-1/2 cents at $10.63 a bushel.
High winds and blowing snow crossed portions of the upper Midwest and the Great Lakes region over the past day, "stressing livestock and causing travel disruptions," the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in a daily weather note.
Temperatures dipped below zero degrees Fahrenheit (minus 18 Celsius) in portions of Minnesota and the Dakotas early on Monday.
