SOFTS-Arabica coffee hits near three-month low, cocoa extends recovery

ReutersDec 17, 2025 2:15 PM

- Arabica coffee futures on the ICE exchange hit near three-month lows on Wednesday as export sales pick up in top grower Brazil amid an improved 2026 production outlook, while cocoa extended its recovery.

COFFEE

Arabica coffee KCc2 was down 0.2% at $3.5140 per lb at 1400 GMT, having hit its lowest since late September at $3.5030.

Dealers said continued pressure from coffee growers to price newly harvested beans is weighing, with near ideal weather in top producer Brazil also boding well for next year's crop.

Sales of Brazil's 2025/26 coffee crop had reached 69% of the expected output by December 10, consultancy Safras & Mercado said, up 7 percentage points from the previous month as U.S. buying picks up after the country removed tariffs on coffee.

Robusta coffee LRCc2 was down 1.5% at $3,774 a metric ton, having hit its lowest since mid-August at $3,745.

Dealers cited aggressive selling by local traders in top robusta grower Vietnam.

COCOA

New York cocoa CCc1 rose 1.1% to $6,066 a ton, continuing to recover after Monday's 5.6% slide.

London cocoa LCCc1 rose 0.7% to 4,393 pounds a ton, also extending its recovery after a 7% slide on Monday.

Dealers said the market remains concerned about output in top grower Ivory Coast, and is closely watching port arrivals data to see if they continue to improve.

Also, Citi has forecast the global cocoa market will record an underwhelming surplus of just 80,000 tons in the 2025/26 season, dealers noted.

Against that however, output in No. 3 grower Ecuador continues to impress, they said.

Shares in Barry Callebaut BARN.S rose 6% on Tuesday after Reuters reported the company was eyeing spinning off its global cocoa unit amid volatile bean prices.

SUGAR

Raw sugar SBc1 slipped 0.4% to 14.75 cents per lb, having settled 0.9% lower on Tuesday.

Shares in Germany's Suedzucker SZUG.DE fell 2.8% after the company guided for a slight decline in revenue and core profit in 2026/27.

Top grower Brazil's sugar production fell sharply in the second half of November.

White sugar LSUc1 slipped 0.3% to $421.90 a ton.
