Carney brushes off calls for retaliation against US over tariffs

ReutersOct 16, 2025 4:29 PM

- Prime Minister Mark Carney on Thursday brushed off calls to retaliate against the United States over its tariffs on some Canadian exports, saying the two countries were deep in talks over key sectors.

U.S. President Donald Trump imposed tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminum and autos earlier this year, prompting Canada to respond in kind. The two sides are now in negotiations about lifting the measures against steel and aluminum.

Doug Ford, the premier of the industrial province of Ontario, says Carney needs to be much tougher with Washington and wants Ottawa to unveil more retaliatory measures.

"There are times to hit back and there are times to talk, and right now is the time to talk," Carney told a televised press conference when asked about the comment.

Carney is due to meet Ford later on Thursday.
