CBOT soybeans end lower; soyoil sags on US EPA biofuel proposal

ReutersSep 17, 2025 8:23 PM

- Chicago Board of Trade soybean futures declined on Wednesday, retreating from two-week highs on profit-taking and a drop in soyoil futures tied to disappointment about a U.S. biofuels proposal, traders said.

  • CBOT November soybeans SX25 settled down 6 cents at $10.43-3/4 per bushel, turning lower after rising to $10.52-3/4, the contract's highest since September 2.

  • CBOT December soymeal SMZ25 ended down 40 cents at $285.70 per short ton and December soyoil BOZ25 tumbled 1.42 cents, or about 2.7%, to finish at 51.78 cents per pound.

  • Soybean oil futures BOv1 slipped as market players digested Tuesday's biofuel blending proposal from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

  • Soyoil futures had jumped on Tuesday as traders awaited guidance. But industry representatives said the agency's proposal, including a 45-day comment period, failed to provide clarity on how to reallocate biofuel blending obligations under the government's Small Refinery Exemption program.

  • Statistics Canada raised its estimate of Canada's 2025 canola harvest to 20.0 million metric tons, up 4.1% from last year and slightly above its August 28 estimate of 19.9 million tons. The agency's latest estimates were based in part on satellite and climatic data.

  • Ahead of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's weekly export sales report on Thursday, analysts expected the government to report export sales of U.S. soybeans in the week ended September 11 at 400,000 to 1,500,000 metric tons.
