Aug 21 - (The Insurer) - Tropical storm conditions are expected along the Virginia coast on Thursday as Hurricane Erin continues to track northward.
In its 5 a.m. EDT (0900 GMT) update on Thursday, the National Hurricane Center said Bermuda may also experience tropical-storm-force winds as Erin passes.
The NHC said Erin’s windspan was continuing to grow, with tropical-storm-force winds now extending 320 miles (515 km) from its centre.
The storm’s hurricane-force winds are expected to remain offshore as it tracks north. The centre of Erin is expected to move between the U.S East Coast and Bermuda early on Friday before passing south of Atlantic Canada on Friday and Saturday.
The NHC update said Erin remains a Category 2 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 105 mph (169 kph), with gradual weakening expected over the coming days.
Erin is the fifth named storm and first hurricane of the Atlantic season. The storm reached Category 5 strength last Saturday as it passed through the northern Caribbean Sea.
