EUROPE GAS-Prices rise as Norwegian outage curbs supply

ReutersAug 11, 2025 9:53 AM

- Dutch and British wholesale gas prices rose slightly on Monday morning, trading in a narrow range, after Norwegian supply was hit by a compressor failure at the Ormen Lange field.

The benchmark Dutch front-month contract at the TTF hub TRNLTTFMc1 was up 0.57 euros at 32.85 euros per megawatt hour (MWh), or $11.18/mmBtu, by 0930 GMT, LSEG data showed.

The Dutch October contract TRNLTTFMc2 was up 0.47 euros at 33.22 euros/MWh.

The British front-month gas price TRGBNBPMc1 gained 2 pence to 81 pence per therm while the British day-ahead contract TRGBNBPD1 was up 2.5 pence at 79.75 p/therm.

Total Norwegian imports were down by 10 million cubic metres (mcm) per day owing to the compressor failure at Ormen Lange, which was not expected to be resolved until August 18, LSEG data showed.

LSEG analyst Saku Jussila said this would mean 70 mcm less Norwegian production this week than previously expected, pushing prices higher.

Temperatures across Northwest Europe this week are expected to be higher than usual for the time of year, increasing power demand for air conditioning.

French nuclear operator EDF said on Thursday that it may be forced to curb nuclear output because of high temperatures of rivers that provide water for cooling. A drop in nuclear power output would increase demand for gas-fired power generation.

On the geopolitical side, U.S. President Trump is expected to hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on August 15.

"This will likely be the focus of the market attention for much of this week, including whether any potential deal would include the supply of Russian gas to Europe," consultancy Auxilione said in a morning note.

Europe's gas storage sites are 71.6% full, latest data from Gas Infrastructure Europe shows.

In the European carbon market, the benchmark contract CFI2Zc1 was down 0.43 euros at 72.78 euros a metric ton.
