July 1 (Reuters) - The U.S. nuclear regulator has approved Dominion Energy's D.N application to extend the operating license of its V.C. Summer power station in South Carolina till 2062, the utility said on Tuesday.
U.S. nuclear power is experiencing a renaissance after decades of stagnation, driven by record demand from data centers used for artificial intelligence technologies and the electrification of industries such as transportation and manufacturing.
President Donald Trump signed executive orders in late May, directing the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission to cut down on regulations and fast-track new licenses for reactors and power plants.
The V.C Summer nuclear power station was originally licensed to operate for 40 years from 1982 through 2022. In 2004, the NRC approved a license renewal to allow operation for 20 more years through 2042.
With the receipt of the second renewed license on Tuesday, the unit can operate through 2062, Dominion Energy said.
Last year, Dominion Energy had received a similar approval to extend the operating licenses for North Anna nuclear power station in Virginia for an additional 20 years.
The Richmond, Virginia-based company also plans to seek NRC approval to extend the operating license for Millstone Power Station in Connecticut.
