Feb 25 - (The Insurer) - Scor has continued to grow its renewable energy portfolio, disclosing on Tuesday that it is the insurer of Terra-Gen's Edwards Sanborn solar and battery storage project in Kern County, California.
Construction of the solar facility began in 2020. Spanning more than 4,600 acres, the initial phases became operational throughout 2022 and 2023.
The Edwards Sanborn project currently has solar energy capacity of 807 megawatts, with battery storage capacity exceeding 3 gigawatt hours. The facility is able to provide up to 1,300 megawatts of power to California's renewable energy infrastructure.
Future phases of the Edwards Sanborn project will aim to interconnect an additional 2,000 megawatts of solar and energy storage to the California Independent System Operator grid. Upon completion, the entire Edwards Sanborn franchise will contribute up to 3.35 gigawatts of solar storage to the grid.
"The Edwards Sanborn solar and battery storage project exemplifies the potential of large-scale renewable energy initiatives," said Scor.
"As Terra-Gen continues to develop and expand the facility, it will support California's clean energy goals and set a precedent for future renewable energy projects across the globe. With the backing of Scor, this project is well-positioned to make a lasting impact on the renewable energy landscape."
The onshore energy market has suffered several significant losses since the start of 2024, including the circa $500mn total loss associated with the Noor Energy solar plant in June 2024 and up to $500mn associated with the January fire at Vistra Corp’s Moss Landing battery energy storage system facility.
