Demand is strong, with 2026 HBM capacity reportedly fully booked, and short-term earnings are expected to show sharp growth in revenue and profit. Despite a strong run in MU stock, valuation on forward estimates is still under the broad market averages.
Micron Technology is a memory maker. It makes DRAM and NAND flash memory, as well as High-Bandwidth Memory (HBM) for use in smartphones, PCs, data center servers, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) accelerators. Unlike chip makers such as Nvidia (NVDA), who determine the pricing of their end products and have them manufactured, Micron sells more commoditized components whose prices are less predictable. The pricing power in memory is governed by the supply and demand balance, not branding, and hence is a cyclical industry. In this build-out for AI, memory has become a bottleneck, and that push has placed Micron squarely in the middle of demand for HBM and data center DRAM.
During this time, Nvidia stock was increasing slowly and MU stock was increasing by 239.1%. Multiple sources have shown that MU stock has increased over the last 6 months by 250%. Compared with previous years, this development cycle was the shift towards profits in memory stocks as the turn of the memory downturn into the memory upturn was mainly led by AI. This adjustment was more due to the change in quantity and price of the amount of memory used in the data center and HBM than to marketing reasons.
The second half of 2025 was a gut punch. AI server builds soak up most HBM, DRAM, and NAND. Contract prices increased in value and lead times lengthened for several quarters. Industry tradition’s commentary is that the supply remains tight at least into 2027 given the length of the time it takes for capacity expansions to come on line. Trend reports suggested the memory market could increase by 134% in 2026 and rise by another 53% in 2027, reaching an estimated $843 billion in revenues. At the same time, companies at the whole-stack level, from accelerators to storage systems, refreshed their cycles more often. In AI, the refresh cadence got even more compressed to annual or quicker refreshes, which in turn underpinned stable ordering for memory content.
Several things seem to be aligning for 2026 to be a cycle year for memory. First, AI servers have vastly higher system DRAM and HBM counts than traditional, and the total deployments are still ramping up. Second, they need more NAND flash to be put under the storage layer to serve massive datasets for training and inference, meaning they require more memory than what a single server socket can provide. Third, the increase in supply is slower than the demand. Micron is planning new fabrication capacity in 2027 and 2028, and its peers are also growing, but it takes years for greenfield fabs and advanced nodes to scale up. Taken together, 2026 appears to be the first full year where supply-demand tightness, pricing, and unit growth all work out in such a manner that both industry revenues and margins get a material boost.
Micron's layout is close. Its HBM3E allows for a capacity that is approximately 50% higher than the offerings of its competitors with about 30% lower power consumption, a very interesting combination for those running AI workloads on performance per watt.
The firm plans to start HBM4E in 2026, with a step of ~60% higher capacity over HBM3E, and also with a ~20% lower energy. This new node will be the basis for the Nvidia Vera Rubin series being manufactured from Q2 2026. Early indications show the entire 2026 data center HBM in Micron is sold out, based on management commentary, which implies the HBM portion (which was ~$35 billion in 2025) could be growing at 40% CAGR to $100 billion by 2028.
Near-term outcomes may reinforce that trend. For the fiscal second quarter of 2026 ended Feb. 28, Micron expects the revenue to be at $18.7 billion, an increase of 132% YoY, with EPS to increase about 480% YoY to $8.19 from the previous year. The company’s cloud memory (which includes HBM) is nearly double at $5.3 billion in the last quarter and expected to climb even higher in the second quarter. If the results and guidance are somewhere near these figures, that can be a big catalyst for the Micron stock.
The trailing twelve months' earnings per share is 10.52 and using this figure the price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio for MU based on past earnings is roughly 33. However, the outlook is quite different for the future. $34.16 is the consensus for MU for full-year fiscal 2026 EPS, giving MU a forward P/E of 11–12. This is well under the mid-20s forward P/E for the S&P 500 and about 50% of the Nasdaq-100. Some estimates are factoring in fiscal 2027 and are projecting $44.55 in EPS, indicating growth for the following year but at a slower pace after the first surge. It is the difference between trailing and forward P/E that creates the appearance of MU stock being “expensive” on a trailing P/E basis and “cheap” on a forward P/E basis. Thus, the market likes to price out cyclical stocks in the current pricing and capacity cycles. But because we are in an AI-driven period, the earnings will be artificially high for longer than in a normal cycle.
Comparison against comparison requires accuracy too. Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) are end-processor designers and ecosystem partners; they are also major customers, but not memory competitors. Micron’s competitors in memory are, in DRAM/HBM, SK Hynix and Samsung, and in NAND, Samsung, Kioxia, and Western Digital (WDC). There are no other pure-play memory competitors that are primary U.S.-listed. MU and WDC are the only primary U.S.-listed pure-play memory competitors.
SK Hynix is known as the dominant second player in the HBM market with a substantial share in it, and Samsung holds a stronger position across a more diversified set of memory types; however, neither of those is U.S.-listed, which in turn makes them more difficult to access by some investors and for inclusion in indices. The addition of Western Digital gives you exposure to NAND flash and HDD, and its valuation and strategic moves can provide upside once storage cycles pick up, although it has no DRAM or HBM where the premium AI accrual is focused. Micron has broader exposure to the AI memory stack than Western Digital with HBM, data center DRAM, and NAND, and its 2026 HBM supply is said to be sold out. Micron is also positioned for HBM4E just in time for the next-gen AI platform. Thus, for concrete U.S.-listed, large-cap, AI-enabled memory exposure, Micron is the most satisfactory and logical option.
Everyone also knows that the memory market is still very cyclical. Pricing is also sensitive to additions in supply, and competitors are also growing capacity. When supply begins to catch up with demand, gains in pricing can slow or even reverse. Demand-side risks also exist. OpenAI also suggested it could cut planned infrastructure expenditure intensity through 2030 to roughly $600 billion from an earlier $1.4 trillion estimate, and if others follow suit, industry-hyped AI Capex might fall short of the most bullish projections. In contrast, some headliners are still expecting to see massive levels of investment; Nvidia’s CEO has talked of "trillions" a year in AI infrastructure investment by 2030. It is the journey between those two extremes that will warm or cool Micron's stock price.
