STOXX DIPS FROM PEAK, EDPR LEADS, FINANCIALS DRAG
There were no fireworks at the open in Europe on Thursday, with the STOXX 600 and FTSE .FTSE benchmarks hovering just below their recent record highs, while Frankfurt's DAX .GDAXI edged up to a new all-time peak.
The region-wide index .STOXX slipped 0.2%, with gains spread across industrials, materials, energy, tech and utilities were offset by weakness in financials. Heavyweight HSBC HSBA.L was the biggest drag, falling 6% after announcing a $13.6 billion buyout of minority shareholders in its Hong Kong unit.
At the top of the STOXX, EDP Renovaveis EDPR.LS rose 4% in Lisbon .PSI20 after Jefferies advised investors to buy the renewables energy company which it sees as "the best way across EU utilities to play US power demand upside".
In Paris, the CAC 40 .FCHI was little changed, up 0.1%, as investors kept a close eye on who President Macron will task next to form a government.
