INVESTORS READY FOR START OF THIRD-QUARTER EARNINGS

While U.S. economic data remains at risk of being delayed if the U.S. government shuts down, investors are still able to focus on early results from U.S. companies for the third-quarter earnings season.

Among them, a quarterly report from Nike NKE.N is due after the closing bell.

Analysts as of Friday expected earnings from S&P 500 companies to increase 8.8% in the third quarter from a year ago, up from 8.6% a week before, according to LSEG data.

That 8.8% gain would still be below second-quarter S&P 500 earnings growth of 13.8% and first-quarter growth of 13.7%.

Since the vast majority of companies typically beat analysts' earnings expectations, the third-quarter estimate is likely to improve, even with companies facing ongoing uncertainties over U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs, said Bruce Zaro, managing director at Granite Wealth Management in Plymouth, Massachusetts.

"Analysts have widely underestimated the power of earnings in the S&P 500 sectors for quite some time," Zaro added.

"My guess would be they (third quarter earnings) will be pretty darn good, and they'll shake off the tariffs and whatever else is on the wall of worry and report yet another good quarter," he said.
