GEN X SWAPS JET FUEL FOR CAMPFIRES
Camping is having a moment. Spending at U.S. campgrounds jumped 15.1% year-over-year in August, the strongest growth since early 2022, according to Bank of America Institute.
“Consumers may be trading airfare for fire pits," the institute notes, citing affordability and a wellness-focused vibe as key drivers.
Gen X is leading the charge, showing the biggest increase in campsite spending so far this year. Younger generations, meanwhile, appear less keen to pitch a tent.
The data suggests a shift in discretionary spending, with budget-conscious consumers opting for nature over jet-setting — a trend that could ripple through travel, leisure, and retail sectors.
After months of weak demand from budget-conscious domestic travelers in the first half of the year, air fares have improved and travel demand has shown signs of rebound.
