SOFTS/-New York cocoa prices edge higher, coffee falls

ReutersAug 12, 2025 11:01 AM

- New York cocoa futures edged up on Tuesday but were well below the prior session's peak as the focus remained on the outlook for the next crop in top grower Ivory Coast.

COCOA

* New York cocoa CCc2 rose 0.7% to $8,504 a metric ton by 1051 GMT, having gained 5.8% on Monday.

* Dealers said the market had derived support this week from concerns about Ivory Coast's upcoming crop with the initial upward move on Monday helping to trigger fund short covering.

* More sunny spells across most of Ivory Coast's cocoa-growing regions will help to boost development of the next October-to-March main crop, farmers said on Monday, adding that cold weather continued last week with below-average rainfall.

* The run-up was, however, seen as overdone and prices are now consolidating well below Monday's peak of $8,823.

* London cocoa LCCc2 fell a marginal 0.02% to 5,712 pounds a ton.

COFFEE

* Arabica coffee futures KCc1 were down 2% at $3.1415 per lb after earlier hitting a six-week high of $3.27.

* Dealers said reports of light, spotty frosts in some Brazil coffee areas had contributed to the run-up in prices this week although the harvest continues to progress well.

* Robusta coffee LRCc2 fell 2.3% to $3,579 a ton.

SUGAR

* Raw sugar SBc1 rose 1.8% to 16.79 cents per lb.

* Dealers said the market had been steadily climbing after hitting a one-month low of 15.92 cents in early August with speculators beginning to scale back a large net short position.

* White sugar LSUc1 gained 1.6% to $482.70 a ton.
