FTSE 100 recovers Trump tariff losses, set for record daily winning streak

ReutersMay 2, 2025 2:46 PM

- Britain's FTSE 100 .FTSE on Friday rose above its closing level on April 2, the day U.S. President Donald Trump announced his plans for reciprocal tariffs on trade partners.

If Friday's gains hold, the index will have risen for a 15th straight day, a new record of consecutive daily increases since the index was founded in 1984.

Global equity markets sold off heavily after Trump's tariff plan was announced on April 2, but have rebounded strongly after Trump paused most of the tariffs for 90 days.

Optimism that major U.S. trading partners will negotiate trade deals, and a solid-so-far first quarter earnings season, albeit laced with underlying caution, have also boosted sentiment.
