- India's benchmark indexes were off to a muted start on Tuesday, as caution prevailed after U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans for trade tariffs on neighbouring countries within hours of taking office.

The Nifty 50 .NSEI was up 0.19% at 23,391.5 points as of 9:18 a.m. IST, while the BSE Sensex .BSESN added 0.07% to 77,134.34.

Seven of the 13 major sectors were marginally lower. The broader, more domestically-focussed smallcaps .NIFSMCP100 and midcaps .NIFMDCP100 traded flat.

U.S. President Donald Trump said his administration was mulling imposing 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada as soon as Feb. 1, dousing investors' hopes of a delay. MKTS/GLOB
