EUROPEAN SHARES STRUGGLE FOR DIRECTION; RETAILERS SOFT

European equity markets are mixed on Thursday, with the retail sector particularly soft after many flagged a challenging a market over the holiday period.

The pan-continental STOXX 600 .STOXX is little changed on the day after falling 0.2% on Wednesday.

Germany's DAX .GDAXI is down 0.2%, France's CAC 40 .FCHI is flat and Britain's FTSE is up 0.5%.

That comes despite some disappointing updates from Britain's retailers, with shares in Tesco, Marks & Spencer, B&M and Greggs all sliding after trading updates.

The STOXX Europe 600 retail index .SXRP is the worst performing sector, down 1.8%.
