WALL STREET OPENS LAST 2024 SESSION HIGHER
Wall Street's three major indexes started the last session of the year with a hopeful lift as all of the S&P 500's 11 major sectors opened higher.
The S&P 500 .SPX and the Dow .DJI and the Nasdaq composite .IXIC are looking to turn the ship around after three sessions of declines.
But Nasdaq trading is more choppy with heavyweight technology .SPLRCT and communication services .SPLRCL choppy on the day and now flat to down.
Despite their wobbles on the day, communication services and technology are set to post the biggest annual gains among the eleven major S&P 500 sectors for 2024.
However, after a strong year for stock markets, the S&P 500 on Tuesday is below Dec. 23's 5974.07 closing level, which it needs to break above by Jan 3's close to declare a so-called Santa Claus rally.
According to the Stock Trader's Almanac, if the Santa rally doesn't appear - meaning that the market doesn't gain over the last five trading days of the year and the first two days of the New Year - it has tended to precede a bear market.
