Dutch online bank Bunq applies for banking license in Mexico
By Noe Torres
MEXICO CITY, May 13 (Reuters) - Dutch online bank Bunq has applied for a banking license in Mexico to serve residents with limited access to financial services, the company said on Wednesday.
• The application filed with the National Banking and Securities Commission (CNBV) would allow Bunq to offer full banking services, including multi-currency accounts and deposits insured by Mexico's IPAB bank savings institute.
• The move is part of a global expansion strategy that includes a pending banking license application in the United States, where the firm recently received broker-dealer approval.
• "As a key connection point between the Americas, Mexico is a natural home for us," founder and CEO Ali Niknam said.
• Bunq operates in more than 30 European markets.
