China congratulates Myanmar junta chief on his election as president

BEIJING, April 3 (Reuters) - China's foreign ministry on Friday congratulated Myanmar junta chief Min Aung Hlaing on his election as the country's president.

China supports the new government of Myanmar in maintaining national peace and stability and achieving development and prosperity, Mao Ning, a ministry spokesperson, said during a regular press briefing.

Min Aung Hlaing, 69, won ‌a parliamentary vote on Friday to become the president, formalising his grip on political power in the war-torn nation five years after he ousted an elected government.
