- Gina Hinojosa, a longtime member of the Texas House of Representatives who served for nearly a decade as chair of the Texas Democratic Party, on Tuesday won the state's Democratic gubernatorial primary, U.S. media reported.

Hinojosa, 52, who was first elected to the Texas House in 2016, was the overwhelming favorite to win the primary. She faces an uphill battle against Texas Governor Greg Abbott in the general election in November. Republican Abbott is seeking a fourth term. A Democrat has not won the governor's race in Texas since 1990.

Hinojosa, a former civil rights and union lawyer, garnered several Texas newspaper endorsements in the primary race. The Houston Chronicle, while writing that she's not "a scintillating candidate," labeled her as the "Democrats' best hope" to retake the governor's office.
