Russia's Lavrov discusses Iran with Qatari counterpart, foreign ministry says
MOSCOW, Feb 28 - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov discussed U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran in a phone call with Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, his ministry said in a statement on Saturday.
The United States and Israel attacked Iran on Saturday, targeting its top leaders and calling for the overthrow of its government, while Iran responded with missiles fired at Israel and neighbouring Gulf countries.
Lavrov and Al Thani called for an end to any military action that could destabilise the region, the statement said.
"There was a general consensus on the need for an urgent return to the political and diplomatic process with a view to resolving all issues between the United States, Israel and the Islamic Republic of Iran on the basis of the principles of the U.N. Charter and the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons," the Russian foreign ministry said.
