GENEVA, Feb 9 (Reuters) - The U.N. human rights chief on Monday called for the verdict against Hong Kong media tycoon Jimmy Lai to be quashed and for him to be released.
"This verdict needs to be promptly quashed as incompatible with international law," said United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk in a statement released after Lai was sentenced to 20 years in jail.
The high-profile national security case became a focus for international concern about Beijing's clamp-down on the city's freedoms.
