QUOTES-Reaction to Hong Kong tycoon Jimmy Lai's 20-year sentence in security trial

Feb 9 (Reuters) - Hong Kong's most vocal China critic, media tycoon Jimmy Lai, was sentenced on Monday to 20 years in jail, ending the city's biggest national security case which drew international concern about Beijing's clampdown on the city's freedoms and autonomy.

Here is reaction to the sentence from domestic and world figures:

ANITTA HIPPER, EUROPEAN UNION LEAD SPOKESPERSON FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS AND SECURITY POLICY:

"The politically motivated prosecution of Jimmy Lai and the former Apple Daily executives and journalists harms Hong Kong’s reputation.

"The EU calls on the Hong Kong authorities to restore confidence in press freedom in Hong Kong, one of the pillars of its historic success as an international financial centre, and to stop prosecuting journalists."

MINORU KIHARA, JAPAN'S CHIEF CABINET SECRETARY:

"We are seriously concerned about the effect this matter could have on the freedom of speech, freedom of association and freedom of assembly, which are the basis of the democratic and stable development Hong Kong has been enjoying."

"The Australian Government is gravely concerned by the sentences handed down to Jimmy Lai and his co-defendants in Hong Kong today.
