- (The Insurer) - Howden has appointed Chris Hughes as chief executive of its New Zealand broking business, effective November.

He will report to Matt Bacon, chief executive of Howden Pacific.

Hughes, who has more than three decades of experience in the sector, will join from IAG New Zealand, where he held senior roles spanning underwriting, distribution and claims. He previously spent 17 years at Rothbury Insurance Brokers, rising to executive general manager.

Current CEO Nigel Wallace will become chair of Howden New Zealand’s broking arm after Hughes takes charge, the company said.

Howden entered the New Zealand market in 2021 and has since grown via a mix of acquisitions and organic expansion, adding specialist teams and broadening its client base across the country.
